Do These Two Things Right Away!! #

Eileen Phelps, editor

The Deadline for This One Is March 25th:

Have you signed up for RootsTech 2022 and checked Relatives at RootsTech? It’s going away this week. You will lose a great chance to contact up to 300 of your closest relatives who might be interested in family history. If you click on this picture once you’ve signed in, you’ll see a map and a list of your total relatives, according to what shows on FamilySearch Family Tree. It will be a huge list. The Taylors are a large family, which is why FamilySearch picks up only 300 closest to you. From there, you can narrow it down. Choose “My Ancestor” from the subheads.

In this sample I chose my grandfather to narrow it down to 33. The sample shows the first of the 33 listed. Three options show below him. I could send this nephew a Message but today I don’t have time. I click on Contact and he is added to my Contacts list. I can go through this list and choose another ancestor and find another group of relatives to add to my Contacts list. If I don’t recognize someone or they have not registered

with their actual name I can click on Relationship and see a tree with the ancestor I chose at the top and see the lines of descent for both of us to that ancestor. The reason for adding this person to my Contacts list is that I will be able to contact them at a later time when the Relatives at RootsTech goes away on March 25th, in accordance with existing privacy agreements.

The Deadline for This One is just before April 9th:

It’s for the 2022 Taylor Family Virtual Reunion. It’s free, just like RootsTech, but again you have to register. This is because we have to let you in. Otherwise you could be a hacker and disrupt the Zoom session. To register, go to TaylorAssociation.org and look for the streaming ad, or go directly to:

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-joseph-taylor-family-association-2nd-annual-virtual- reunion-tickets-257574491237

The Taylor Reunion will take place Saturday, April 9th, from 1 pm to 3 pm Mountain Daylight Time. We will tell you more about what our association is doing and display new things that will be added to our website. We will have opportunities for visiting and asking questions and we hope you’ll tell us what you would like to see us work on in the future. By collaborating we can hire professionals and do yDNA testing when the

opportunities arise and we are working to improve our research and find documentation for the connections in our records. Our goal is to help our Taylors keep track of each other and build an accurate history. As more records are digitized and available online we hope to someday trace our history back to Europe in a way that is more than guesswork. We want our descendants to be able to share our Taylor story with each other.

RootsTech 2022 and the Taylors #

A Great Start for Us on the First Morning

This session took place on the first morning at nine a.m. of March 3rd. It was right on target for our family association and it affirmed what our own research has shown us about Joseph Taylor Sr. and Nancy’s lifestyle. They were NOT upper-crust powdered wig and boarding-school-educated planters as some of our earlier genealogists thought. They were working-class and those who had land were considered to be yeoman-class, which is slightly better but not gentry. Virginia had become a society with rigid class divisions just as England was. The Taylors became better off by means of the land grant they had obtained but they didn’t become wealthy or highly educated.

What is Tarheel Country? It’s the backwoods area that’s harder to get at, that well-to-do settlers (called Cavaliers in this presentation) didn’t want. This map shows the relative costs of land in the eastern ends of the colonies. Note that Norfolk is in the $$$ section of Virginia. According to the tax lists (called tithables) Joseph’s father probably owned no land in Norfolk County although it is possible that earlier Taylor generations did.

What did Joseph Taylor Sr. have to pay to apply for a land grant? We don’t know, but we need to find out what kinds of records survive for Granville grants. If any do survive they are not yet on-line. We have the image for the record that describes the property and this is on our website but we have no image for Joseph’s application for the grant and what he might have paid in order to apply. Edgecombe County is right on the edge of the $$ property and it is more likely that the Taylors paid only $ for their land. It is on a creek, which is good, but it is not a navigable creek.

A large part of the property is swampy. Were the Taylors tarheels? Very likely. Tarheel was the nickname for someone who often went barefoot on land that tar could get splattered on. This land was useful for naval stores, which included turpentine and tar and we are pretty sure the Taylors made tar. The RootsTech session also discussed “Who Settled Tarheel Country?” and described three main groups: Criminals (those who were transported), Cavaliers (younger children of the Gentry class who did not inherit

the family estate in England, and came to the colonies to “seek their fortune”), and Contractors (those who signed a contract as indentured servants to pay for their voyage). We have not found a record to tell us for certain who our first Taylor emigrant was, but the odds are that he would have been an indentured servant. (Our Theories story on our website tells who we think he may have been, but we hope to someday prove or disprove this idea through yDNA testing.)

A map of roads indicates that the Taylor grant lies between the two middle roads and the path the Taylors followed to move to North Carolina could have included parts of both roads. Another map that was shown hints that the ethnicity of the white set- tlers to this area were almost all English, rather than Scots or Irish. Joseph Taylor Jr.’s son William married Elizabeth Patrick. Her ethnicity reflects what that map shows for farther west. Mecklenburg Co. VA, where she came from, abuts the area labeled Scotch, Irish, German, and English.

The session also mentioned that the Church of England was not well established in North Carolina, particularly as the time of the Revolutionary War drew nearer. Other materials that the Taylor Family Association has researched bear this out. Our readers who are familiar with Jane Austen’s works realize that the vicars of local parishes were usually connected to the Gentry class and enjoyed a prosperous lifestyle, with a large vicarage and servants to maintain it. They were usually not willing to come to a terri- tory where they would be dependent on a few widely-scattered settlers who lived in cabins and did their own farm work for enough to feed their families. These settlers were not interested in being tithed (taxed) to support the Church of England in a style far above what the settlers had themselves. Thus today’s genealogists will not find much in early church records and must rely more on court records such as deeds and wills for the Tarheel region. The session states “Anglican church waning, avoiding records was kinda the point, gravesites were private.”

The session tells us that because the typical records were scarce a researcher must study the history of the whole area, to learn “Baseline culture: language, religion, class, family life, cuisine, architecture, migration, etc.” and suggests several books and links to historical societies. Weather and infrastructure and also suggested as topic for study. We plan to put items on the website that fall into this category.

We also need to check these and other suggested resources.

We believe there are many North Carolina records that are not easily available online. Some have never been scanned. Others are digitized but not indexed. We have a real need for willing volunteers to help us look, especially those who live near or in North Carolina today. But if we post those things that we have already learned, future researchers will have a solid start.

Taylor Association Updates #

A Meeting with Software Engineers from FamilySearch

From a report by Nancy Gregory

Gordon Taylor, Ron Taylor, and Nancy Gregory from the Taylor Family Association had a virtual meeting on 16 March 2022 with Todd Powell, Ryan Plumb, software engineers for Relatives at RootsTech, and “Ryon #1 Bazzle” [another developer] from FamilySearch regarding the RootsTech2022 Relatives Around Me app. This app is very powerful and allows everyone registering for RootsTech2022 to build a contact list from as many as 300 relatives who are also registered for RootsTech2022. Todd was very interested in the work that we as a family are doing to further our family history. The Taylor Family Association was very interested in using that app to find family members with whom we could communicate to get any information they can add to the family history. We aired a few grievances with this list and Todd assured us that they would take these into consideration. Primarily we asked that in future RootsTech presentations, there would be more sessions that would provide training in how to use that useful feature. We would also like to be able to track those 300 relatives by the date and time they joined RootsTech so we can eliminate any duplication. We would like to be able to export that list of relatives into a spreadsheet file to be able to keep better track of them. We also asked that we be able to add these contacts into a “Family Group” so that we can communicate more effectively with the family of a specific ancestor through FamilySearch.

Todd did point out that the relationships and links are only as good as the data that is in FamilySearch as entered by the users; they don’t control the data. The service that determines all the relationships finds the closest relationship path.

On 25 March 2022, FamilySearch will discontinue the Relatives at RootsTech 2022 list. However, if you have added your relatives to the contact list, that contact list will be migrated over to your FamilySearch as a new icon next to your usual FamilySearch message list. This will ensure that you can easily find these contacts and begin to work with them to further your family history. Todd assured us that they will consider our request for better training. Next year another option will be added so that we can tap on a contact card and see their email if they have chosen to make their email public. FamilySearch has a new service called User Profile Service; it’s the first time they’ve had the ability to create a real user profile. They are pushing this “user-to-user” profile, encouraging users to update their profiles. Coming in July of this year, there will be some changes to the messaging system designed to make this easier.

In closing, Todd posed the question: “Using FamilySearch, what should users be doing to collaborate with the current tools, and what tools are missing?” Anyone who has an answer for this question should send an email to the TFA Secretary, Nancy Gregory, at her email: ngregory16@gmail.com.

We at Taylor Family Association are very excited about the changes that are coming to FamilySearch and encourage our family members to make the best use of these new features.

Your Editor’s Two Cents on This Subject

Not many of us are aware of how unusual the Taylor Association is. There aren’t many family associations that encompass such a large family. We’re trying to keep track of more than a quarter million people. We’re trying to verify and share records gathered over a century and a half about this family. We have ancestors who have pioneered in America since the mid 1600s and we ourselves are pioneering in our attempt to do this for a family of commoners (instead of noblemen) and an extremely common surname. If we collaborate successfully we can become a major model for other families in the future.

Here’s the Third Thing for You To Do! #

Check your family in the 1950 United States Census in April

Gordon Taylor, with Eileen Phelps

The 1950 Census becomes available April 11st. This is exciting! Our records show 83,984 family members alive [that we know of] during this census period.

The plan is that the computer will index your family census records for those alive during the period and then that you can VERIFY the data. (You will be able to make a correction of any Census field.)

We recommend that you listen to all three RootsTech videos before you begin. The second video is very useful for the hands-on experience. (Note it is 28 Minutes.)

https://www.familysearch.org/1950census/

https://www.familysearch.org/rootstech/session/get-involved-and-reviewing-the-1950-census https://www.familysearch.org/rootstech/search?f.text=1950%20census&p.index=0&p.pageCount=10

We recommend that you start now by looking at your immediate family to find those members that were alive in 1950. Legacy Family Tree has an excellent feature to search for persons alive during a particular census year. You can use this list as your task list. (Ron, will share the steps during the TFA Virtual Reunion on 9 April and it will then be available on the TFA Website – Taylorassociation.org)

Once you have complete verification of family members, you can volunteer to verify neighbors and communities.

FamilySearch plans to be able to save your family census work and attach it as a source to the person(s) in the FamilySearch Family Tree. Their target is mid-April for this add-on FamilySearch feature to be available.

A preview of what you will see on the Review site:

First, you look for your family, by state, surname, county, and city, if you know them.

If your line is in FamilySearch Family Tree you may get additional suggestions for further searches. All Taylors have some ancestors in the tree but this works best if you’ve added yourself.

You will be offered the chance to be sure that all the household in the census is included, even if it overlaps the page break. (Note that a robot has already indexed this page with OCR technology.)

You will be given a chance on the screens that follow to fix any mistakes the robot has made. (You can see that this page hand-printed, not written in cursive. The OCR technology is getting smarter and smarter, but long-hand writing is tougher, even for humans.)

We will have more to show and demonstrate in our virtual family reunion.

The Taylor Times Will Need a New Editor in 2023 #

Yes, I’m officially quitting the job after 29 years. I’m not quitting the Association, but it’s time for someone else to step in as the newsletter person.

There’s no getting around it, I’m 87 and 3/4 years old. Not only is everything getting harder to do, but I might suddenly show up in the obituaries myself.

You remember that you didn’t get a couple of issues of Volume 25 because I couldn’t get online enough to do them, besides being evacuated three times and having a computer crash? If we’d had an assistant editor, something could have been done.

We are also accumulating a lot of obituary scans and some bi- ographies that we’d like to sort and share, but we have no one volunteering to do that just now.

I will continue to update articles from the T Times and upload them to the website. I’m hoping to have a dozen or more to be available by the Virtual Reunion and plan to keep going until I’ve put all the research I’ve got in my files up where it can be easily read. If I manage to do more research I’ll write it, too.

This is pretty urgent. I’ll have more to say in the next few is- sues about what the job entails. Future T Times newsletters wouldn’t have to look like the current ones, though.

We actually need many kinds of volunteers. If you want to help in some way but you’re not sure just where your talents fit, let’s talk it over, starting with the reunion.
