The Taylor Family Association presents the first virtual gathering of Taylor kin; the descendants of Joseph Taylor Sr. and wife, Nancy. #

About this Event

A gathering of family is a wonderful thing. Yet the Taylor Family Association recognizes the challenges of in-person gatherings in these interesting times. So instead, we invite you to join us for the very first Virtual Reunion of the descendants of Joseph Taylor Sr. and Nancy. This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet family from across the country; to hear stories and see artifacts of our shared history; to learn about the current research being done on the Taylor lines; and to make connections in a very unique way. We hope that you’ll plan to join us, and invite your own families to do the same. (If you have questions, please contact a member of the TFA Board, or reach out to Mike Deal at themikedeal@gmail.com)

The Western Branch – An Update #

A New Look at the Boundaries of Our Earliest Known Taylor Location

Eileen Phelps, editor

We know our Joseph Taylor Sr. came from Norfolk County, Va. because his North Carolina grant paperwork says so. Then some of the Norfolk County Tithables (taxpayers) lists were found in a shed behind the courthouse and showed that Joseph Taylor came from the Western Branch part of the county. If you look at a map of the now-extinct Norfolk County you will see that the Elizabeth River drains the county to the north, but has three main branches, Eastern, Southern, and Western.

All during the time that Joseph and his parents, probably Richard & Dinah, appear in the Tithables lists the area where they lived is called the Western Branch and then the Western Branch Precinct. The word “precinct” implies that there would be a definite boundary there, and we have wondered exactly where that boundary was.

Joseph Taylor Sr.’s parents don’t seem to have owned any land in Norfolk County, which means land records can’t help us here. Earlier research by William Thorndale suggested we had a connection with a Richard Taylor who lived on the Southern Branch a couple of centuries earlier, which would have taken us over the pond to London. We haven’t proved or disproved this, but since there are land records that hint of this Richard that show he had property on the western side of the Southern Branch (at Julian Creek), we have wanted to know where the boundary might lie between the Western Branch Precinct and the Southern Branch which undergoes a lot of splitting into smaller areas with various descriptions and loses its identity over time. An area vaguely called the Southern Branch was most likely never mapped, just described through landmarks.

Norfolk and Portsmouth are on the eastern and western sides of the mouth of the Elizabeth River, respectively. They pretty much post-date Joseph’s time in Virginia, but they became independent cities and all the leftovers of the county land have now become the independent city of Chesapeake. Reading a story of the formation of Chesapeake, brought to light “Western Branch Borough.” Asking Google Maps for a map of the Western Branch Borough brought up the map we showed in the Taylor Times Vol.22 No.4. None of the Western Branch extended into Portsmouth. It’s all in Chesapeake and on the western side of the western branch of the river. (The Julian Creek area is also in Chesapeake.)

Later, we asked Google Maps from another starting point to give us a map of the Western Branch and this time it came up with the same map, now labeled “Western Branch North.” Another look at the Tithables list showed, that after Joseph’s time, the Western Branch precinct had been split up between the North and the South. So where was the Western Branch South? It seemed to have disappeared, once again leaving those pesky boundaries in question.

Keep in mind that Google is essentially a robot. If you don’t ask the right question in exactly the right way, you don’t get the right answer. Your editor was watching a webinar on doing Google Searches and learned about the phrase map of  —–. So while the webinar was still going on she Googled map of western branch south VA. Voila!

Now we can see that a tiny southeast corner of the Western Branch South is actually on the eastern side of the western branch of the river. However, there is a Taylor Road and a Bruce Road on the west side of the river in Western Branch North. (Bruce is the possible maiden name for Joseph’s mother Dinah, according to Gayle Hix, another Taylor researcher.)

This doesn’t prove or disprove anything, however. There is an interesting link between those two Taylor families. Hotten’s list of Truelove passengers in 1635 showed a Richard Taylor and a Roger Hodges, who seem to have married the Manning sisters and had land on the southern branch of the river. Roger Hodges may have been a cooper. Our Joseph Taylor got cooper’s tools that were his father’s. Our yDNA tests showed that we match a man by the name of Hodges. The maps of the Western Branch show that there was once a ferry across the western branch of the river that was operated by a Hodges. (See Hodges Ferry Road in the map.)

So the Hodges connection is still there. However, the maps indicate that the Taylors of the Western Branch would not have been an easy walk to the Southern Branch. They would have had to pay a ferryman, which might have been just enough of a luxury to cause cousins to drift apart over two hundred years. Not surprising that there are no records tying them securely to- gether, even assuming that they were related.

We still need to find descendants of the Richard Taylor who married Margaret Manning in order to do a yDNA test. Or find some Taylors in Europe that are a yDNA match, which might come from London.

Nowadays Googling “Western Branch Precinct” brings up some results. The Library of Virginia has posted an index of what they hold of the Norfolk County Tithables.

https://ead.lib.virginia.edu/vivaxtf/view?docId=lva/vi02084.xml#places. (Click on Advanced if you need to.)

There is a list of all of the areas, precincts, routes, and what-have-you that were assigned to the enumerators and which box and which folder holds the results. Unfortunately, they do not furnish lists of the names of the inhabitants—the actual “tithables” are individuals subject to the tax—perhaps because they don’t have rights to the transcription made by Elizabeth Wingo, published in three volumes and available at the Family History Library. I have DVD images, but they are hard to read & unsorted. There is an article summarizing our theories on our website and articles throughout our Taylor Times issues on these topics. We hope to create a section on our updated website that will collect all this information and sources in one place for the benefit of future researchers. In the meantime, you can use Google Maps and Google Earth to take a closer look at our origins in America. The property belonging to the Southern Branch Taylors is in the St. Julian’s Creek Annex, part of Chesapeake and now a Super- fund site. The Western Branch area is still quite unspoiled.

North & South Branch

There is now a bridge over the Western Branch of the Elizabeth River (VA 333) where the ferry would have crossed (Google Maps 2020). Facing west, the south half of the old precinct is on the left & the north half on the right.

You can detect the shape of the old precinct on the left part of the Google map. (It helps to see these boundaries in the on-line color view of this picture.) In the lower right there is an arrow pointing to Julian’s Creek. The smooth dark green areas are swamp land, less likely to be where Joseph would have lived.

An Airplane in North Ogden in 1914? #

Does Anyone Know About This? Is It True? Eileen Phelps

This is a picture that appears in FamilySearch Family Tree Memories more than once. The children in the pony cart are children of George Bailey Taylor, Grandson of Joseph Taylor & Mary Moore. The version shown here has a caption attached that hints at a story. It says these children are going to see “the first airplane.”

The first airplane? Not likely. Arguably, that was the Wright I. See: http://www.wright-brothers.org/

Inform a t i o n D e s k / J u s t t h e F a c t s / A i r p l a n e s / Flyer_I.htm

It had to be the first airplane the children had a chance to see. (You will remember that by World War I 1914-1918 there were fighter planes busy on both sides.)

Today the Ogden area has Hill Air Force Base, but that did not come into existence until World War II. At the time of this photo, more likely to be 1914 or 15, based on the size of little Harold on the right, there would not likely be anything more than a farmer’s field; an early airplane could land on in North Ogden. Salt Lake City, perhaps, but not North Ogden. So far, nothing has popped up in early issues of the Ogden newspapers of the 1910’s telling of any special visits to this quiet rural town.

There were other pictures taken at the same time. (Note the checked dress Edna is wearing.) The one below shows unidentified friends or relatives they must have been visiting at the time. Does anyone recognize them? Or do they have a family story about that early airplane?

George Taylor’s children lived in Plain City, UT at this time. George Taylor was born in Harrisville, UT and his mother Mary Lake was the first white child born in North Ogden. Between the Taylors and Lakes, there are many possible cousins.

Readers, if you have any old photo albums, please have a look to see whether these people seem familiar. The unknowns are 1st, 2nd, & 3rd on the left and 4th & 5th from the right. Or not. There is an addi- tional picture of the Taylors from that day, but it’s equally out of focus.

We’d like a picture of that airplane, too!

A Look at some Utah Epidemics #

Compared to 1910-1919, We Have Fewer Diseases to Fear Today

Many of the descendants of William Taylor & Elizabeth Patrick settled in Utah for several generations, so this chart will be of interest to their descendants today. This is a list of reportable diseases. The term “Reportable” means that they were a serious enough problem that the Utah Department required that all deaths from these diseases be reported to the authorities so that epidemics could be tracked and what- ever aids were available could be distributed. The figures do not separate out the deaths from the totals. (Note the line at the bottom that says “morbidity and mortality.” )

Notice, however, that Indian reservations and the military were not included in the totals. Those cases would have been handled by other agencies.

You can print an enlarged copy of this chart from http://health.utah.gov/epi/data/ historical summary/1910-1919.pdf.
