The Elizabeth River Parish #

This was a parish of the Church of England, and it was founded “before 1643,” according to the FamilySearch Wiki. The Parish church was St. Paul’s, and was situated in what is now the Independent City of Norfolk, on the upper eastern side of the Elizabeth River. This building still stands.

We have no reason to believe that the early Virginia Taylors were anything but Church of England, since that was the “default” religion, established by the government and supported by the taxes paid by the tith- ables, who included Joseph Taylor Sr. and his probable father Richard.

There was a Chuckatuck Monthly Meeting established by the Quakers in 1656 in the area that later became Portsmouth, but no traditions about Quakers indicate any connection with the Taylors, since both Joseph Taylor Sr. & Joseph Taylor Jr. supported the Revolutionary War and the Quakers were pacifists. This was the only other denomination known to be established while our Taylors lived in Norfolk County. The history of the parish is described in the book Old Churches, Ministers, and Families of Virginia, published in 1861, downloadable from Google Books. The section about Norfolk County is available from:

https://books.google.com/books?id=TSISAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA61&lpg=PA61#v=onepage&q&f=false

Additional history is available in the book Colonial Churches: A Series of Sketches of Churches in the Original Col- ony of Virginia., published in 1907, also downloadable from Google Books.

St. Paul’s Church, built about 1739 in what is today the Independent City of Norfolk, would have been seen by your Taylor ancestors. It is not likely that the Taylors living in the Western Branch of Norfolk County would have been able to ferry across two branches of the river twice to travel here to worship every Sunday.

The Elizabeth River Parish covered the whole of Norfolk County in Joseph Taylor Sr.’s time there. If this parish of the Church of England had been located in England itself, there would be surviving parish regis- ters with Taylor baptisms, marriages, and burials, together with backup Bishop’s Transcript copies else- where. Here’s what happened instead:

“With the opening of the year 1776 there came sad days to St. Paul’s. The bombardment of the town by the fleet of Lord Dunmore, and the firing of the homes left the place in ruins. St. Paul’s did not escape. The interior was burned out, but the walls, built strong and true, remained intact save for the scar of a ball from the frigate Liverpool, which can be seen to-day mented in the indenture it made. With the church were lost the ancient records and many things that linked it with the past. The church was partially restored after the disaster to the town,…”

According to the Old Churches book, only a fragment of the parish register survives. The images of the transcription were published in the William & Mary Quarterly, Vol, 11, No. 3, and imaged by JStor.org. That record is from the Southern Branch from October 1751 to October 1752. It contains baptisms, but no Taylor names, except a James Taylor, mayor of Norfolk, mentioned as a vestry- man after Joseph’s time in the county. There are five Hodges baptisms, one Wallis, and one Cherry bap- tism. At the present time (2021) no mention is made of any additional record discoveries.

Because of the difficulties of travel other smaller “chapels of ease” were constructed. The Book Old Churches… says:

“There is an entry showing that Mr. Smith, the minister, received sixteen thousand-weight of tobacco for preaching at the mother-church, (St. Paul’s, in Norfolk) and four thousand for each of the three chapels, that at the Great Bridge, where the first battle of the Revolution was fought, that at Tanner’s Creek, and the Southern Branch Chapel. In the year 1753, a Western Branch Chapel is also spoken of. “

This Western Branch chapel would have been where the Taylors probably worshipped, if the chapel was actually constructed earlier than 1753. There were some places of worship constructed in the 1600’s, as settlers arrived in this area not long after Jamestown was settled, but no doubt most were simple wooden cabins without being considered a chapel. The book also says that there were not enough clergy to hold services every week and that “lay readers” sometimes read from the Bible, as few families owned one or could read. There is also mention of the existence of catechisms, little books that taught doctrine by a series of questions and answers that preachers carried with them. Old Bibles were usually pretty bulky.

Finding the Taylor Land in North Carolina Today #

Eileen Phelps

Joseph Taylor (Sr.), while in Norfolk Co., Virginia got a Granville grant for land in North Carolina. His son, Joseph Jr. got a couple pieces of adjacent land later as a bounty for his service in the Revolutionary War.

There are at least eight maps showing the land the two men owned and none of them are totally helpful, thanks to the loss of early landmarks. And none of them show how to get to the property by car, because there is now a U.S. Highway 64 limited- access dual-lane roadway close to the property but with no exit to the road the property touches.

This is the outline of the original grant drawn on a modern topo map (2021). The outline should be juggled until the edge touches the county line, leaving room for the bounty grant found later. This doesn’t show US-Hwy 64.

This map shows part of the bounty land (lower left) and shows that part of the original grant was sold to a Thomas Taylor. This map shows no roads at all.

The purpose of this item is to explain how to find the Taylor land virtually and how to get there in person someday. It’s my job because I went to a reunion there once. I was riding with relatives, but thanks to the new highway not being on our maps, we got lost.

If you live out in the country you know that in rural areas the long way around to a place may be the shortest way to take a car, and a driveway without a street address is hard to describe to a car’s GPS system, or a person’s imagination, so here’s how to find your way with Google Maps.

“First, ask Google Maps for Tarboro, NC. You will see U.S. Hwy 64 running through it. Pretend your finger or mouse cursor is a car and you are driving east on 64 for about three or four exits. You might see a sign saying Coneto Creek and right after that there will be an exit to Route NC-42. (If you see an exit to U.S. 13 you have gone too far. Back up—virtually.) Make a left turn at Route 42 and go northeast until you get to Roberson School Road, or it may be labeled State Road 1527 or there may be a sign with the historical name Mayo’s Crossroads. (Mayo was a Taylor neighbor.) Turn right and go southeast. Do not cross over Crisp Creek. Do not cross U.S. 64.

“There will be a white rail fence marking the bridge over Crisp Creek. The entrance to the one-time Taylor property is on your left, just before the creek. It is a dirt road only a Jeep would love. You can drive part way in to park your car, but to follow the road all the way you will need to walk. Wear virtual mud boots, long pants & sleeves, and watch for ticks. You will have Crisp Creek as the boundary on your right and on your left beyond a strip of trees you will see swampland. Stick to the dirt road. Don’t trip over the old bricks and other rubble someone has brought in to build up the road a bit. There will probably still be a sign, indicating that the trees are being managed by a separate company, which means no cutting souvenirs with a virtual chain saw.”

You’re here!

Do not trust the street address number Google suggests. It doesn’t go far enough, but if you actually go there and have to put something in your car’s GPS, you will probably land on State Rd. 1527. Just keep going and watch for the creek and strip of woodland. A practice run with Google Maps before the real trip will give you confidence.

Kentucky Researchers, Please Note:

This screen is from a Zoom lecture about burned courthouses and what to do if you are researching a “burned county.”

During the Civil War, a lot of damage was done to southern county court- houses, but not all records were destroyed. As for Warren County:

FamilySearch.org tells you “A disaster destroyed most of the records.”

Raogk.org (Random Acst of Genealogical Kindness) tells you “A courthouse fire destroyed some records in 1864.”

Kdla.ky.gov tells you “No substantial record loss.” This is the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives. Which of these repositories is most likely to know best? The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives. Which of these repositories is the one you might look at first? FamilySearch.org. The point of this particular lecture was that you shouldn’t give up your searches too quickly.
