President’s Message by Roger Taylor Russell #

It’s a new decade- the 2020’s. Much has been accomplished in the last decade as we pursue the purpose of the Joseph Taylor Sr. family. We have two goals! One, to gather the descendants of Joseph Sr. and Nancy Taylor of North Carolina, ca 1728-1808 and second, to find the ancestors of Joseph and Nancy.

The gathering of descendants has become the passion of Gordon Taylor, the Vice President of the Taylor Family Association. Many of you have been asked to take a slice of the family and gather information about the descendants. I have been asked to gather information on the Orson Shurtliff Taylor Family. Thank you to all of you that are working on this.

We have made very little progress in finding the ancestors of Joseph and Nancy but we are hoping we will get a DNA breakthrough soon. Keep up your prayers! We need to find them.

As a family we will gather at RootsTech on Friday, February 28th, at noon. Look for signs and also use the mobile app for RelativeFinder and enter the group RootsTech 2020. We look forward to meeting with you.

Again, thank you to so many that make this Taylor Family Association successful. The 2020’s will be great!

RootsTech 2020 #

Many Taylor Descendants Will Be There, Feb 26-29. Let’s Connect.

This is the 10th anniversary for RootsTech and what started out as a conference mainly for techies has grown into “the world’s largest family celebration event.” That’s partly because it’s now a conference for everyone who’s interested in family history, even at the beginner level. Even if you have never gotten closer to a computer than your smart phone.

Half the fun of a conference like this is the “electricity” you sense when so many like-minded people get together. You can come away feeling all excited about what you’re going to do with your family history in a way that you rarely feel when you’re sitting alone at your own desk trying to think about where to search next.

Gordon Taylor, our VP of Descendancy, has been getting good results from contacts he has made with Taylor cousins. He is asking for volunteers to help send messages to Taylor descendants who show up on Relatives Around Me and Relative Finder.

RootsTech can’t post the attendees after the conference is over and it takes several people working on the list in order to reach everyone. We want all the Taylor descendants who attend to know about our organization.

Too often a Utah pioneer family grows so big that collaboration doesn’t take place much, and our Taylor family is much larger than just a Utah family. We read many obituaries that say the deceased was an avid genealogist and had dozens of descendants, yet we know nothing about that Taylor family branch in the last hundred years and they didn’t know about our own research. We want to change that.

Gordon has printed 500 business cards to hand out, with the details as shown in the box above. They ex- plain how to join Relative Finder in a way that will not disappear when RootsTech is over. You do not even need to be at RootsTech to be on our own list, but if you do plan to be there, be sure to get on the list RootsTech is sure to post as well.

William Taylor’s Baptismal Dates #

A Clarification about his membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

It has been eleven years since this topic was discussed in the Taylor Times. You can see the earlier article in the Taylor Times vol. 15 #2 p.6, but if you don’t save these issues, it’s online in the members’ section. If you are a member and don’t have access, contact Mark Taylor (see p.10) for a password.

Evidence for his baptism in 1832:

Family tradition says that William believed his was the first convert baptism in Missouri.

LaMar C. Berrett’s Sacred Places, vol. 4 Missouri, (Salt Lake City, Deseret Book, c. 2000) contains the map segment reproduced here. Here are a couple of paragraphs about this on pages 540 & 541. (isbn #1-57008-9339-6. Amazon has but compare $$.)

“William Taylor, from Kentucky moved with his wife Elizabeth to Monroe County in 1830, He was one of the first converts to the Church in Missouri. Eighty of his 240 acres were located on the south side of State [hwy] 164, .25 mile east of the intersection of State 154 and State 197.”

“Members of the Allred, Taylor, and lvie families joined the Church and formed what was known as the Salt Creek Branch of Missouri converts in Missouri during the Mormon period of 1831-39. Parley P. Pratt called the branch a ‘large branch’ (APPP 115). He had been a missionary there in 1833 and returned with Zion’s Camp in 1834.”

Evidence for his baptism in 1834:

LDS Church ordinance records on FamilySearch.org show his baptism as being 1 June 1834.

According to some Taylor family records this was performed on the Fishing River after a sermon given by Joseph Smith at a schoolhouse in Fishing River, after a visit to the Salt Creek branch by Zion’s Camp. (Zion’s Camp arrived in the Salt Creek area June 7 & 8 and left the area on June 12th, according to Sacred Places.)

William Taylor was possibly baptized twice. This was not unheard of in pioneer times. It may have been done as a way of renewing one’s covenants. Though today the Sacrament is regarded as the ordinance for this purpose, there were a number of pioneers who were baptized more than once.

Even in modern times members whose baptism dates have been lost have been rebaptized. Your editor remembers a sister in her ward who was born in the church and married in the temple being rebaptized in her old age for this reason.

Are You a Mayflower Descendant? #

Some Taylor Collateral Lines Seem to Point That Way,

Eileen Phelps, editor

This year is the 400th anniversary of the landing of the pilgrims at Plymouth, Massachusetts, so if you’ve got a Mayflower ancestor, this is a good time to add the fact to your family lore. Your Taylor ancestors missed that particular boat, but it seems that a number of their descendants married into Mayflower lines. If you have early New England ancestors you might like to try Relative Finder to look for some possibilities. See Page 2 for instructions and when you are in, check out the Group Filter column on the left. Check only the box that says Mayflower. You will then get a list of possible connections it finds.

IMPORTANT! This information is only as good as the data that is in FamilySearch Family Tree (FSFT), which is full of errors. For example, if you see Thomas Rogers on your list, forget him. Extensive research by the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) shows he has absoutely no documented descendants, but many Taylors still list him as an ancestor.

Your next step is to go to AmericanAncestors.org the website for NEHGS and you will find that the Mayflower passengers are so carefully researched for five generations that you only need to be sure of the later connections in your own tree.

For example, if you have Sarah Jane Marler in your pedigree, you should find Edward Fuller in your list. FSFT often confuses his nephew Samuel with his grandson Samuel, but the real problem is with the Heath connec- tions. Sarah’s mother was Harriet Heath, who probably supplied some details from memory. However, FSFT shows sources such as “Ancestral File.” Worthless. There are three generations above Harriet that need thorough documentation to know whether Sarah really was a Mayflower descendant.

If you have deep pockets you can hire one of the NEHGS researchers to verify or disprove a line you find in FSFT or have in your files, but they are offering a free booklet you can download to set your search on the right compass point. I will see what I can do to help the Heath line, and if any of you want to share a Mayflower voyage of discovery with your Taylor cousins I will be happy to log it in the upcoming issues of the Taylor Times.

Did the Taylors Dose With Turpentine? #

They Probably Did, Like Many Others.

Eileen Phelps

Turpentine has been used as a medicine for thousands of years and doctors in the 1800s used it even though they knew about the possible sorry side effects, according to Atlas Obscura.

“The rectified oil of Turpentine is a medicine much less used than it deserves to be. The reason probably is, the fear of its producing violent effects on the alimentary canal and urinary organs,” one doctor wrote in 1821. He also wrote that turpentine could greatly be put to use killing internal worms, since insects instantly died if exposed to the liquid. He ordered one patient afflicted with tapeworms to drink turpentine every few hours. During the Civil War, doctors administered turpentine internally and externally to halt infection, often with dubious results.”

“King of the [medicines] was turpentine, a product of the tidewater pine forests,” Kentucky historian Thomas D. Clark wrote. “Turpentine had three important medical requisites: It smelled loud, tasted bad, and burned like the woods on fire.”

“Clark would know. Turpentine was widely used in the American South. When sailing meant wooden ships, pine products were in high demand for sealing leaks and preserving wood. The British especially valued pine forests, and almost immediately on reaching the Americas, they went in search of enough pines to produce the favored products. A “turpentine belt” developed in the South, and whole forests were tapped for resin. For many years, slaves were forced to do the difficult, painstaking work of making turpentine by “boxing” pine trees. Unfortunately, they were also compelled to take it as medicine, along with castor oil, for any number of illnesses. Today, some Americans still consider turpentine, often mixed with sugar, to be a folk remedy.”

The Taylors came from the South, and Joseph Taylor Sr. sold part of his land grant to a Thomas Taylor who was a shipbuilder. Thomas never lived on the land, so it is logical to assume that he wanted the property for “naval stores.” Google defines these:

Naval stores, products such as tar, pitch, turpentine, pine oil, rosin, and terpenes obtained from the pine and other coniferous trees, and originally used in maintaining wooden sailing ships.

Those of us who have visited the Taylor property know that the section bought by Thomas, who may have been a relative, still has pine trees on it, more so than the property Joseph Taylor Sr. retained, which was nearer to the swamp.

Surprisingly, you can still purchase turpentine for medicinal purposes. Try looking for it on the Internet. It still is considered a folk remedy, but not widely recommended.

A Snake Oil Ad for a Product Containing Turpentine

Today we have many more choices of remedies for ailments than people had in colonial times. We are more likely to hurt ourselves with other products, such as DDT, Roundup and the like.

The Taylors were a hardy bunch, for which we can be thankful. Maybe they mostly relied on mustard plasters and chicken soup.

Editor’s Two Cents Worth

You may be surprised to get an- other issue of the Taylor Times so soon after the prior one, but the last issues have been delayed because we did not have a vol- unteer to handle the printing and mailing. We have one now, Teresa Johnson, for whom we’re really grateful, because we wanted one more issue to get out before the start of Roots Tech. This issue completes the volume for 2019, so we’ll have to get right back to work on the first issue for 2020. Who knows? We might actually catch up to date.
