The Taylors and Clemenses Were Neighbors #

But as for William Taylor & Samuel Clemens, Never the Twain Did Meet

Eileen Phelps

Mark Taylor, our membership VP, sent an interesting map he acquired when he visited Hannibal, Missouri this year. It sketches out properties that belonged to relatives of Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain. This is in the same area as the Allred Settlement, where William Taylor first bought a farm in Missouri. You can compare this map with the reprint on the next page of the map from Sacred Places, Vol. 4 Missouri included in the Taylor Times vol. 23 no.4 p.3 and vol.15 no.2 p.6.

Photo taken from diagram in the museum/visitors center at Mark Twain State Park in Florida, Missouri.

William Taylor & Mark Twain never met because political persecutions that took place in “Bloody Missouri” caused William to sell his lands and move twice before Mark/Samuel’s birth in 1835. However, it seems likely that William knew some of the Clemens relatives. Notice the section marked 22 on both maps and you will see that the homes of Mark/Samuel;s Lampton relatives and William Taylor would have been located very near each other. It would be interesting to overlay one map over the other to view the two properties.

On the Salt River Branch map, most of the “Twain” properties would be un- derwater! The Clarence Cannon Dam was completed in 1983 and Mark Twain Lake was created.

The place as mapped above never existed, but in fairness to Mr. Berrett, his map was created to help pioneer descendants locate ancestral properties if they traveled to Missouri today.

Still, it gives a grossly inaccurate impression of what life might have been like for William Taylor’s family back in the day. Obviously, William never saw this dam or the extra water.

If you want to poke around online for more details, see Wikipedia for additional information, both about the Salt River and about Mark Twain, who was born downstream in the town of Florida. The Salt, after many twists and turns, empties into the Mississippi.

Jefferson and South Fork townships should cover it.

There is a legal property description of the Taylor lands in FamilySearch Family Tree. I have obtained a pre-dam map of the area and Gordon Taylor has Berrett’s maps of Taylor properties in several counties in Missouri. The next Taylor Times issue will have more maps from Missouri.

Epidemics #

They’re Nothing “Novel” in Our Taylor History

We need to take time to feel thankful that we don’t have pandemics more often. It’s true that modern-day travel and world trade have made this novel coronavirus spread widely and quickly over the entire planet and Covid-19 hangs over us, whether or not we live in a hotspot. However, if we look at our own family history we discover tragic stories that point to diseases that are now thankfully rare.

From the Delilah taylor & John Wallace Line:

Eaton Wallace, born abt.1825 in Stewart County, TN & his wife Milbry M. Sills, born 26 Jan 1826 in Stewart County. The 1850 Census shows them living in Trigg County, KY. They died in March, 1853.

  • Notes under Eaton in FamiySearch Family Tree:

“Eat Wallace contracted smallpox which spread throughout the family, causing the deaths of all family members except Rufus and Marcus.” (History of Stewart Co, Tenn.)

  • Notes under Child #1, Rufus

Info from 1850 Census, Trigg Co, KY, Rufus Wallace, age 1 yr, born in KY, residing with parents. Info from 1860 Census, Lyon Co, KY, Rufus Wallace, age 11 yrs, born in KY. living with brother Marcus at Kuttawa with Samuel[sic] & Elizabeth Sills. “Rufus and his brother Marcus were the only ones to survive the smallpox epidemic which killed his parents and other sib- lings.” (History of Stewart Co, Tenn.)

  • Notes under Child #2, Marcus

Info from History of Stewart Co, Tenn. “Marcus and his brother Rufus were the only members of this family to survive the small- pox epidemic. Info from 1860 Census, Lyons Co, KY, Marcus Wallace, age 10 yrs, born in KY, residing with brother Rufus at Kuttawa with Lemuel & Elizabeth Sills. Info from Court records of Trigg Co, KY, Wednesday, 23 Aug 1853, p. 235, (GS #321334), which gave the birthdate of Rufus and Marcus. Rufus’ Uncle Caswell Wallace named Guardian for Rufus and Marcus. An Indenture of Apprenticeship made, 12 Dec 1853, p. 257.”

Diptheria:

From the Joseph Taylor & Mary Moore Line: #

William Andrew Taylor & his wife Philomela Lake lost three children to this epidemic. George Lorin, age 3, died 21 Dec 1879. Millie Almeda, age 5, died 4 Jan 1880. Bailey, age 7, died 8 Jan 1880. Here are links to a recorded interview with David Ernest Polson and the picture shown here, with mementos of the children. http://cdn2.legacystories.org/mp3/9bMeR.wav

http://cdn2.legacystories.org/ image/999.jpg.

The picture at the right is the grieving parents.

There are stories about them in our biographies section.

Two children survived, but they were blessed with eight more children who all lived to grow up. Their longest-lived child, Iriminda, died at age 107!

(Modern technology can enable digital copies of these photos of the family to be restored and sharpened.)

Cholera:

Sarah Jane Marler (Lake) married Pleasant Green Taylor

Her story is told in the “New Era” magazine of July 1997. See “I’m the Only One” or: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/new-era/1997/07/im-the-only-one?lang=eng

Spanish Flu (1917-8):

From the Nancy Jane Taylor & Jonathan Smith Line:

Floss Smith & Ben Tueller’s story of World War I, from the Taylor Times Vol 23 #2, Pages 4-6, includes mentions of the flu and its terrible effect on the soldiers. (More died from the flu than from the warfare.) Our Taylor database shows 247 deaths in 1918, but we don’t know how many might have been from the flu. We need more details.

More :

Measles, Typhoid, Polio, and many more have plagued us in the past.

Even in these hard times today, we can be appreciate what we have when we learn about our ancestors’ lives.

We Have Big Plans for Our Website

Meet David R. Taylor, Assistant Webmaster

It is always a red-letter day to get a new volunteer to help with our organization. We are a VERY BIG Taylor family, and need many volunteers to record our stories, share our data, and keep us organized and informed.

We are especially pleased when we can enlist a volunteer with the kind of tech smarts that David has. Such people are in great demand and get spread very thin.

David is working on updating the Obituaries and Biographies on our website to make them easier to use. We are also planning to improve our access to the feature articles in the back issues of the Taylor Talk/Taylor Times newsletters. While the articles are indexed and the issues from Autumn 1993 forward are on our website, a proposed upgrade would be to have each index item converted to a live link to the article.

Your newsletter editor has long wished to expand the Taylor Online Library on our website, including posting feature articles for easy reference, but she’s finding she hasn’t got the stamina to add that task to the other family history commitments she already has. Karl also finds that he has been spread very thin, and has been busy moving, so having an assistant like David is an answer to prayer.

We have a couple of other volunteers in the wings, we’ll tell you about in our next issue, coming out in late summer, and we also hope to have more slicer volunteers, who give us news and updates for our data- base. (Ron Taylor is working on a spread- sheet of deaths that need details. More about that in the next issue also.)

The Broad Ax #

About Julius F. Taylor (1853-1934) an African-American publisher in Salt Lake City

While we have no known genealogical connection either to Julius or to whatever Taylor plantation owner conferred his surname to Julius when he was freed, here is a bit of history probably known to members of our own Taylor family who lived in northern Utah at the time, and might be of interest to our readers today.

If you have heard of the Library of Congress’ Chronicling America Project, you know that a grant was offered to each state for digitizing all the state’s newspapers (presumably those found in the Library of Congress). Utah’s grant was given to the University of Utah and this newspaper’s images can be found at https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn84024055/

Here are some excerpts from the web page explanation:

Throughout its history, the Broad Ax (Salt Lake City and Chicago) was issued weekly by its founder, publisher, and editor, Julius F. Taylor (1853-1934). Born into slavery near New Market, Virginia, Julius Taylor was the 13th of 14 children of Gilbert and Mary Ann Taylor. Taylor’s parents and older siblings had earlier been sold to different owners but remained in relatively close proximity in the Shenandoah Valley. In the mid-1860s Taylor made his way to Philadelphia and settled successively in St. Paul, Minnesota; Fargo, North Dakota; and Chicago, before arriving in Salt Lake City in 1895. There Taylor founded the Broad Ax, which joined two other black newspapers published in Salt Lake City at a time when there were fewer than 1,000 African Americans in the state.

The first issue, published on August 31, 1895, carries the motto that remained with the paper until it ceased in 1931: “Hew to the line.” Taylor announced that his paper would be “Democratic in politics, advocating the immortal principles of Jefferson and Jackson.” He advocated racial equality, religious tolerance, and support for Free Silver (and, later William Jennings Bryan). As one scholar observed, “a sharp-tongued, Democratic, atheistic, African American editor in Utah in the 1890s stood out as an anomaly” (Michael S. Sweeney, “Julius F. Taylor and the Broad Ax of Salt Lake City, Utah Historical Quarterly 77, no. 3: 205).

With tensions rising between the Broad Ax and the leaders of the Latter Day Saints in Salt Lake City, Taylor relocated to Chicago in 1899. The last issue of the Broad Ax published in Salt Lake City was vol. 4, no. 41, dated June 6, 1899. Taylor relaunched the paper in Chicago, continuing the same numbering, with the July 15 issue. Along with a description of his editorial platform (roughly identical to the description in the first issue in 1895), the Chicago debut issue carried an endorsement signed by the mayor of Chicago, Carter Henry Harrison II.

Described by one historian as “the most controversial black newspaper in Chicago in the late nineteenth century” (Juliet E. K. Walker, “The Promised Land: The Chicago Defender and the Black Press in Illinois: 1862-1970,” in The Black Press in the Middle West, 1865-1985, ed. by Henry Lewis Suggs, Greenwood Press, 1996, 21), the Broad Ax was noted for its caustic, inflammatory language and criticism of Booker T. Washington. During World War I, Taylor provided extensive coverage of lynchings that took place on American soil while black soldiers fought for the United States in Europe.

We have to hand it to Julius Taylor for his courage to speak out about the injustices he perceived. While we have made progress in racial tolerance since those days, we obviously still have a way to go. But a war of words beats a riot any day.
