Report on the Taylor Association #
What have we been doing since last March? #

The Taylor Family Association has been very busy this year, but you have not heard much about it because you missed getting two newsletters. Much of what you see in this newsletter was written and lost, written, and lost, and rewritten again. Why? Two evacuations, once from a wildfire that took out our internet and once from a newsworthy snowstorm that took out our electricity and water—and internet. In between these evacuations my computer crashed. That took out my email and two weeks’ worth of work on the much-delayed Taylor Times.
I am not the only Taylor descendant who has had an interesting year. Those of you in western Tennessee, including Stew- art County, experienced newsworthy flooding in the summer and a couple of months later those of you in Kentucky, including Warren County, were involved in a record-breaking, and also newsworthy, tornado that did a lot of damage in Bowling Green. We have not had news of specific damage to Wallace or Taylor properties, but you have been in our prayers.
Ron Taylor has filled in hundreds of details in our database. Ron has been focusing on the deaths that were missing from our database for people who would have been over 100 years and continues to update the Death Index. For privacy reasons, the database is not open to the public, but the Death Index is available. (See our last issue for details.) Nancy Gregory and Shari Franke provide most of our obituaries.
Gordon Taylor has spent many hours contacting Taylor descendants and recruiting help from “slicers.” Slicers are volunteers who receive a slice from the database showing what we have for their Taylor line and who have agreed to contact some of their close relatives for updated information. This might include siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews. They receive this information in a slice of our Legacy Family Tree file that merges seamlessly back into Legacy without adding duplicate names like some software programs do. Gordon has also been hard at work planning for another TFAVFR
(Taylor Family Association Virtual Family Reunion) April 9th. He is also working on gathering names through the Relative Finder and Relatives Around Me apps provided through RootsTech 2022. Many more details are coming in another Taylor Times planned for February.
Nancy Gregory, our TFA Secretary and Assistant Database Manager, has spent the last several years working with Gordon Taylor, our TFA Vice-President, on the Ancestry and MyHeritage DNA matches to her husband, Roy Delore Gregory, who is a Taylor descendant through Joseph Taylor and Hannah Mariah Harris. These DNA matches have allowed the Taylor Family Association to update and add family information to the master database. This work also allows the Taylor Family Association to contact family descendants to encourage more connection with the Taylor Family Association. (Nancy also provides our Google Meet agendas and minutes. We meet online most early Saturday mornings.)
Reid Brown has been working on fundraising and construction of a monument for William Bailey Lake, an ancestor of many of William Taylor’s descendants. (See Page 4 for that story.)
Roger Russell has retired from his dental practice and has embarked on a new teaching adventure in rural Alaska. He has promised us a story for the next Taylor Times.
Mike Deal has been working to keep the membership records up to date. This is a massive job. Mark Taylor has completed his mission and is planning to get active with the Taylor Association again.
David Taylor is our go-to person for the website. I plan to upload the things I promised to load last year and couldn’t. David gives advice and fixes things that can go wrong when the bugs get busy. He’s our WordPress expert. Space doesn’t permit giving everyone credit but there are quite a few helpers behind the scenes. (Better news coverage next year. I’ll be in Albuquerque.)
How to Visit the Taylor and Hudnall Cemeteries #
Thanks to the efforts of Faye Alford, you can now have a map that helps you find the historic Taylor & Hudnall cemeteries. She has a wonderful map that shows all known cemeteries in Warren County, one of the important places our ancestors settled after Joseph Taylor Jr.’s family left North Carolina. Obviously, not all of our Taylors are buried here, but this cemetery is a private family one and probably the earliest family graves are in this place.
No individual headstones are found here but there is a monument and there is also a fence. The Taylor Association is trying to work out a contract for maintenance as blackberries and other underbrush need to be cleared once or twice each year. We will be adding more maps and Kentucky details on our website at https://taylorassociation.org in the coming year.
As you can see, Faye has marked the Hudnall Cemetery, another private cemetery for Taylor rela- tives and descendants. Google hasn’t provided a street view for Benleo Road, but it is “just around the corner” from the Taylor Cemetery and if this is your line, you won’t want to miss it.
There is also a Green River Union Cemetery, where the Taylors also have a monument. We have pictures of the chapel that was there and those will be posted to the website as well.
Here’s the dirt road you will be looking for. The house (not owned by Taylors) is your landmark. The street view in Google Maps says this picture is 3690 Richardsville Rd, Bowling Green, KY. Bowling Green is the Postal Address. The cemetery is closer to Richardsville, but not in the city limits of either place.

“On 23 March 1858, Bailey Lake and nine other men were dispatched from Fort Lemhi to carry mail to Salt Lake City. On their return journey they travelled west of Pocatello, Idaho, through Fort Hall, and proceeded south following the Bannock Creek, between the Deep Creek range on the west and the Bannock range on the east. It was here, at Rock Springs, the ten returning missionaries were attacked by a small group of rogue Natives. The ground was muddy in this area where the north-flowing Ban- nock Creek converges with West Fork Creek, and Bailey’s horse became mired. As he rode up the opposite bank, a ball from one of the Indian’s guns struck him in the head, killing him instantly. At least two arrows also entered his body. Because of a variety of disadvantages, the remaining nine men had to leave Bailey’s body behind.

The body of Bailey, stripped of all clothing and with a lock of hair about three inches in diameter missing from the crown of his head, was discovered three or four days later by another con- tingency coming from the Salmon River Mission.
His body was placed in a wagon, packed in snow to preserve it, and transported back to his home in Utah,…”

Here are the directions to the monument site, located adjacent to the Arbon post office from Malad and Pocatello
If you are coming north on I-15, take Exit 13 at Malad, ID. Come down into town a few blocks to the stop sign. Go a half block south (left) to Hiway 38.
Proceed west on State RT 38 thru Malad and continue west on RT 38 for 19 miles. Watch out for deer.
Road splits at this point–take the right-hand road (it is a very gradual right) on the county road (no RT #) to Arbon for another 30 miles to Post Office. After the first half-mile, you will be going north (mostly) for the next 30 miles.
If you get to a small town named Holbrook, you have missed your turn and need to turn around and go back to where the road split.
Warning – If you use your GPS, it will bring you over the Hudspeth Cutoff, which has not been a good road since 1856 at the end of the Gold Rush. This will not be fun. It will not be fun for your vehicle or for your insurance agent. We know people who have done this – but that is another story.
At about mile 29 you will know you are getting close to the Post Office because you will pass Arbon Elementary School, which is a white building. The post office is a blue trailer house one more half mile straight north.
From Pocatello – #
Proceed west on I-86 as if you were going to American Falls. Go past the Airport Exit. This is not your exit.
Your exit is the next one, at Bannock Peak Truck Stop, (I think Exit 52) about 7.5 miles west from I-15.
Go south (left) on Arbon Rd county road for 25 miles to the post office. You have reached Arbon when you see the blue trailer house that is the post office.
Any contributions toward the monument are welcome and can be made to the Taylor Family Association for forwarding. The monument is 60-inches tall, 30-inches wide and 8-inches thick. The stone is from the Barre Vermont granite quarry, the very best and cost about $7,000.
