A Major Update to Our Website #

It’s Coming, But Please Be Patient

Eileen Phelps, Editor

For a long time now, Karl Taylor, our webmaster, has felt the need of help with the Taylor Association website. He has been our webmaster for exactly twenty years! You won’t find many volunteers that dedicated! Karl has been a pioneer with this effort, as we are one of the early family associations to even have a website, and there was little in the way of software that would handle all aspects of such a venture. Karl wound up needing to use HTML, ASP-VBScript, CSS, SQL, PHP and JavaScript. Programs he used were FTP, Visual Studio, Photo Editor, Flash and MySQL. Is it any wonder that he’s been waiting for a couple of years for an assistant or replacement volunteer?

We feel pretty lucky to have that volunteer now. He’s David R. Taylor and we first introduced him in our last issue. He feels that it’s time for us to take advantage of the latest software that will incorporate our needs into one program with plug-ins. WordPress is the software that is proving to be most popular for non-profits. Best of all, it’s mostly free. WordPress also comes with many time-saving templates to integrate pictures with content and make the website look easier to use.

Now for the bad news. Converting to WordPress takes time. It can take several months to get a large website into the new format. Part of the reason for this is that to take advantage of the possibilities WordPress offers really calls for a complete redesign of how each page looks. For this, David wants our feedback. See his contact information on Page 10.

  • What do we want to find on our website?
  • What do we want our website to do for our rela- tives?
  • What info do we have to share with Taylor cous- ins?
  • What frustrations have we had when we went looking for something?
  • Do we know of some great website examples?

We need to provide as much information as we can while keeping privacy concerns in mind, however. For this reason we won’t be posting information about living people unless that person submitted the information or it has already appeared in a newspaper announcement.

Please take some time to think about our website and what you’d like to get from it. Our whole purpose as an organization is to gather the best research and make it available to all our Taylor descendants. A website is the best way to do this, and we have benefitted from Karl’s dedicated work. He will continue to assist David in this update and we will be reporting to you in our upcoming newsletters.

Emery Mac Hubbard #

A Hero of World War II’s Battle of the Bulge

Emery Hubbard, 1924-2017, is a descendant of Allen Taylor and Hannah Egbert. He served as a master sergeant in the 75th Infantry Division of the 289th Infantry Regiment. His medals included the Bronze Star, Combat Infan- try Badge, ETO medal with three battle stars. German Occupation Medal and Victory Medal.

Emery participated in the Battle of the Bulge in the heavily-forested Ardennes region of eastern Belgium. The battle lasted between December 16, 1944 to Jan 25, 1945. More than a million soldiers were involved on both sides, including 600,000 Americans, 500,000 Germans, and 55,000 British. There were also French, Belgian, and Canadian troops. Casualties included 100,000 Germans, 81,000 Americans (19,000 were killed), and 1,400 British (200 killed), according to The Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.

Emery’s story appeared in the Bakersfield California newspaper if November 11, 2000, which tells of a reunion that took place that year in the town of Grandmenil in Belgium where returning members of the 75th Division were honored by the grateful townspeople.

When he was interviewed, Emery recounted some of his memories and feelings. “We asked [the townspeople] how they could see us after all the damage we did and they told us no matter how bad we were, the Germans were a lot worse. In Belgium, they teach the children what happened and that we liberated them from the Nazis.”

The reunion group visited the Henri Chapelle U.S. Military Cemetery in Holland where 500 members of the 75th are buried. He himself was spared when so many others were killed. On Christmas night 1944 he caught sight of Germans advancing. The Ger- mans had set up a machine gun in a nearby house. According to an account in the “75th Infantry Division History Book,” Hub- bard* volunteered to be a part of a squad of six who lead assault on the post. Four of the men were killed but Hubbard and a companion were able to knock out the German position. On another occasion Emery volunteered to go back to collect some records and equipment that was left when a group fled the Germans. As they were gathering the equipment the Germans began firing on them. A medic ambulance accidentally passed between them and the Germans, catching the bullets instead.

A slightly different experience happened to Emery in Appenwihr, France, smoke was seen that the GIs feared came from a German post. “My sergeant told me to go in and take out the German post, and (the squad) would cover me,” Hubbard said. He went into the build- ing with a submachine gun and a pistol and kicked down the door, but he found a family praying over a meager meal. “I just quietly backed away.” During his visit to this village he asked an 85-year-old woman if she had heard about the GI who had busted down a door. Heard about him? She had seem it. as she was one of the people in that room. According to Hubbard, the woman was so happy to see them that she hurried to notify the mayor that the 75th had returned.

The news brought a warm welcome from the mayor and others who took the veterans to the school. Hanging on a wall in the school was a plaque of the 75th Infantry Division and below it there was a description of how the 75th had liberated them.

“Some of the things we had to do in this war were really terrible,” Emery told Carol Holmes, the news reporter. “I had wondered if (serving in the war) was worth it, but the trip to Europe made me proud that I had served my country because they appeared so grateful for what we had done.”

Although the map above is less accurate when it comes to the old waterways, which map do you think would be more help to you when visiting by car? Not the one on the right. Actually, neither map would get you to the lands if you tried to enter an address into your car’s GPS system. We hope to get GPS points to help you navigate someday.

We wonder how William knew where to find the land he had purchased. There are a few “roads” marked on this 1876 map. What were the trails like in 1831?

More Maps of William Taylor’s Lands in Monroe County, Missouri #

This is a follow-up to the article in our last issue about the Salt River Branch map showing the Allred Settlement.

Here are two more maps of the first farms William Taylor (son of Joseph Taylor Jr. and Sarah Best) bought in Missouri in 1831. The one on the left is a part of another Berrett map. This shows the southern piece of land William owned, which is an improvement, but still shows the Salt River as being much larger and a lake that did not exist in William’s time. The map below is a hundred years closer, but still half a century later than William’s time (notice the railroad track in the upper left). It’s a section of an 1876 map of Monroe County showing the townships and showing the water as covering a much smaller area of the land. It’s not possible to say whether there was a creek running through either piece of property in 1831 from the 1876 map, however. As there is less detail. Use the section numbers and the names of the river forks when you compare the maps.

When we get our updated Taylor Association website running we will have these and other maps of the area online and copies of the entire maps. Ultimately we hope to have many maps of Taylor properties and historic sites for the benefit of our Taylor cousins who like to travel.

The TFA Death Index Project #

Ron Taylor has been hard at work on this for months

We have a very big family, which means we’ve got a very big Taylor database. As of October 11th, it has 100,825 descendants of Joseph Sr. and Nancy Taylor. If we don’t keep track of our Taylor descendants we can’t collaborate with them, but a large database needs a lot of tending. We need to provide sources for the names and dates, so researchers can know what to trust and what to verify. We also need to keep track of upcoming generations, to keep the collaborating going. Genealogists are often middle-aged or older and family organizations can die out if the younger generations are not involved.

Ron Taylor is our database manager and he’s undertaken a massive project this year. He has used the sorting capabilities of Legacy Family Tree to create an index of all the descendants and spouses in the database who have death dates in the 21st century included with their name. As of October 11th, the list includes 9,557 individuals. Ron has searched Find A Grave for details about these people and also found many obituaries. Many of these obituaries also name family members and descendants that Ron has been able to add to our database.

Ron calculates that 8,519 individuals have been added to the database since April 12 when he first began this project. (About 31 were added with Gordon’s slice, a combination of his and the slicer team’s efforts. Nancy Gregory has contributed a number of obituaries that have added about 40 people.) It’s obvious that Find A Grave has been a fruitful source of information in addition to sources for burials.

As for discrepancies between our database and Find A Grave that required Ron to do further research to prove which one was right. Ron says “The main thing that was wrong on Find-a-Grave was that people who posted entries there had not been careful about their data matching what was actually on the tombstone. I believe that most tombstones are correct when they are erected near the time of the burial because the people that paid for them would want them to be accurate. I can’t say that for tombstones erected many years later as a way to memorialize some ancestor. I did detect quite a few cenotaphs for our Taylor clan which also can be a surprise because Find-a-Grave does not always identify those clearly.”

There is more still to be done. Ron says there are 1998 deaths he couldn’t locate in Find A Grave He says “Some may have incorrect names, dates, etc. which may explain why I could not find them.”

“Now that I have reviewed Find-a-Grave for individuals in the database with death date after 12/31/1999 and descendants of Joseph Taylor and Nancy, I just now looked for any descendant that has no children in the data- base and died after 12/31/1999. If they died after age 15, they might have children that we are missing. Without reducing the number by those who died before age 15, there are 2818 individuals with possibilities. I would guess that 60 percent of those probably had children so about 1600 individuals in the database who died after 12/31/1999 are missing children. There would be many more if all individuals in the database were considered.

The grand total of individuals in the database is 303,851 as of October 11, 2020. This shows that our data- base also includes a large number of collateral relatives and potential relatives under comparison/ consideration. Legacy Family Tree has so much sorting capability that we don’t have to maintain separate databases for individuals we might need for comparison or locality history purposes. Eventually, the index will include all references to obituaries stored on our website as well as the Milestones that have appeared in various issues of the Taylor Times.

Can you help us? Yes! Check to see if your Taylor relatives who are deceased are listed in Find A Grave. Can you upload something to Find A Grave to include them? If you do add to Find A Grave, let Ron know about it. See his contact information on Page 10 of this issue.
