Finding Taylor Descendants #

And Other Efforts to Keep in Touch

It’s reunion season again.

The annual Wallace reunion will be held June 8th at the Dover Visitor Center in Dover, TN. The descendants of Evans Wallace (1807-1864) sponsor this event but it is open to all Wallace descendants and their spouses.

Gordon Taylor, our vice president in charge of descendancy research, has prepared wall charts of the descendants of both Amy Taylor Wallace and Delilah Taylor Wallace. Since Gordon will not be able to attend because of a wedding in his family, Jonilee Slovak and Kerri Grellener, both from Texas, will display these charts and represent our Taylor Family Association to gather information.

Sadly, the annual Allred reunion scheduled for July 12 & 13th was canceled because the planned location was not available.

This was a missed opportunity for us to connect with descendants of Isaac Allred and Julia Ann Taylor & Allen Taylor and Sarah Lovisa Allred, and Taylors of later generations who have Allred connections.

There are many smaller reunions taking place among Taylor descendants. You can help.

Gordon Taylor conducts a Google Hangout most Saturday mornings with Ron Taylor, our database man- ager, and Roger Russell, our president, Mark Taylor, our membership vice president, and Nancy Gregory, who is working on charting results of autosomal DNA matches, to connect the test results with our paper and database documentation. Currently, the database has 90,548 Taylor descendants and spouses. Ron estimates that this may be slightly less than half of the actual descendants. Ours is a REALLY BIG FAMILY.

We have nowhere near enough volunteers who are working on slices of the database that apply to their family. Every little bit helps. We sometimes find obituaries of Taylor descendants that say they had as many as 50 or more children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and find that our database doesn’t even have a spouse for them. Our officers are working really hard at trying to keep up.

Gordon and Ron have been using the Relative Finder utility to connect with Taylor cousins. We encourage you to update your pedigree in Relative Finder every so often. Instructions for joining Relative Finder for the first time or updating your pedigree are found on Page 3.

FamilySearch is adding some improvements to help people collaborate, but some of them are not adequate for the needs of a really large family. There were an estimated 472 Taylor descendants who were present at RootsTech 2019 in Salt Lake City in March, but we have no way to contact most of them.

Gary McCloud Shares the Story of His Great Uncle Artie Gordon Manco

My great-uncle was a WWI hero and he won the Distinguished Service Cross September 1918.

He also was in the service prior to WWI and saw service during the Mexican Campaign during the trouble with Pancho Villa.

His name on various muster rolls shows his enlistment as April 15, 1915 and that he was promoted to private 1st class from private on July 25, 1915.

He was promoted from corporal to Sergeant on August 8, 1917.

His heroism and wounding of May 27-28, 1918 are described here:

Back on the job, and more heroism in September 12, 1918:

Artie Gordon Manco was born on February 25, 1895 in Warren County, Kentucky to Robert Manco and Lottie Jones Manco. He was their second child. He is a descendant of Joseph Taylor Jr. and Sarah Best through their daughter Frances Taylor who married William B. Cherry Jr. Their daughter Charlotte Cherry married Obadiah Milam. Their daughter Sarah Margaret Milam married Samuel Thomas Jones, whose daughter Lottie was Artie’s mother.

World War II #

Are You Related to Taylors in Weber County, Utah?

Kim Skeen Dixon has started a series of books about Weber County’s involvement in World War II.

Kim’s father served in Iwo Jima and Okinawa and her grandmother had three sons sent off to battle. (A younger son served later in Korea and Vietnam. The family was blessed to have all of them return home safely, and military service is a big part of the family lore.

As she researched the background of her father’s service, Kim scoured the old newspa- pers and she decided to broaden her studies and writing to include all of the kinds of service rendered by the citizens of Weber County, which includes the greater Ogden area. She has compiled a nearly 500-page book that includes articles, letters, and adver- tisements published in Ogden’s Standard-Examiner. This is the first of several volumes and covers the period from the attack on Pearl Harbor in December, 1941 to the end of 1942. She plans to cover one year in each volume, which will mean four volumes are planned. The second volume is likely nearing completion. She has been working for over four years on these books.

Men and women worked at local military installations like Hill Air Force Base, the Ogden Arsenal, Defense Depot Ogden and the Clearfield Naval Supply Depot. Utah as a whole had 14 military installations and 40,000 jobs. More than half of this workforce was employed at Hill Field as the base was then called. Hill had 15,000 civilians, 6,000 military personnel, and “several thousand” prisoners of war.

You can purchase Kim Dixon’s book through her website: WeberCountysGreatestGeneration.com. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home.

Kim is a descendant of Joseph Taylor & Hannah Mariah Harris. See our Milestones on Page 8 for Kim’s line and see Page 6 for a couple of Wahlen items. They are also Taylor descendants.

By D Grace of God #

When Ben Taylor got a begging post from Liberia on his Facebook page he was a bit suspicious. It didn’t come from one of his Facebook friends.

It said “Helo Sir wel my name is Joel from Liberia West Africa. Please I beg you in name of GOD I need some assistance from a Business or financial assistance dat wil help empower me pls.”

Most of us would ignore such a message as a scam, but Ben had a connection with Liberia. He’d served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Minnesota among many refugees who had escaped that war-torn country. He decided to offer Joel Willie a business proposal and see what would happen. Willie would take pictures of his home in Liberia. If they were good enough, he would sell them and split the profits 50/50 with Willie.

Willie responded with some pictures that showed Ben that his cell phone could not produce the needed quality so Ben sent him a better camera. He didn’t stop there. Willie needed instruction in composition and lighting and everything he could think of to improve the pictures. He compiled the best of them into a booklet called “By D Grace of God.” He advertised it on his You- Tube Channel, “Pleasant Green.” (Guess where he got that name from?)

The results have been wonderful for the children and schools in Willie’s village and the surrounding villages. This story has been featured on CBS News, in the Deseret News December 18, 2018 and in the March, 2019 Reader’s Digest. You can find the rest of the story online at:

Another booklet is now available.

John Taylor’s Daring Save #

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was founded in 1830 and planned a large first printing of the revelations received by Joseph Smith, to be called The Book of Commandments. Printing had begun in a print shop in Independence, Mis- souri in 1833. In July the printshop was attacked and destroyed by a mob. Many Taylor descendants have heard the story of the two brave girls who rescued pages of the Book of Commandments, but not many have heard of the part that John Taylor, son of William Taylor & Elizabeth Patrick, played. According to church historians “Several church members risked their safety to salvage pages during the attack” and members in Missouri & Kirtland, Ohio bound the salvaged pages into incomplete copies of that edition. Less than three dozen survive today. The next printing took place in 1835 under the title The Doctrine and Covenants of the Church of the Latter Day Saints.

Mark J. Taylor, our membership vice-president, has given us a transcription of John Taylor’s handwritten statement:

“In 1833 at the time of the destruction of the Printing Press in Independence Jackson Co. the printed sheets of the Book of Command- ments & the pied type & press were thrown in an old stable by the mob. I asked Bp Partridge if I might go & get out some copies of the Book of Commandments. He said it would most likely cost me my life if I attempted it. I told him I did not mind hazarding my life to se- cure some copies of the commandments. He then said I might go. I ran my hand in to a crack between the logs & pulled out a few at a time until I got as many as I could carry, when I was discovered. A dozen men surrounded me and commenced throwing stones at me and I shouted out “Oh my God must I be stoned to death like Stephen for the sake of the word of the Lord.” The Lord gave me strength & skill to elude them and make my escape without being hit by a stone. I delivered the copies to Bp Partridge who said I had done a good work and my escape was a miracle. These I believe are the only copies of that edition of the Book of Commandments preserved from destruction.”

Your Editor’s Two Cents

This is the first issue of the 2019 volume of the Taylor Times, which means it should have come out in March. Unfortunately, I moved in March and fell behind.

What with some health problems that required surgery and delayed my move, and what with unpacking and trying to get my Taylor materials organized, I found it hard to concentrate on fam- ily history matters. It doesn’t help that I’m in my eighties either.

I have a good start on the material for the next issue and I hope to surprise you all by getting it put together before the end of this month. There will be another World War I story that’s too long to fit into this issue, along with a couple of other features ready.

At the end of July I will be moving again. I will have more band- width when I’m back in Albuquerque, so I plan to upload the World War I stories to our website at that time. There will be plenty of room for more stories and it’s not too soon to think of starting a round of World War II stories.

During these moves my cell phone and email don’t change. How- ever, I have been getting a lot of spam calls on my cell, so I don’t answer calls that don’t show a name on my phone screen. If you telephone me for the first time, please leave a voice message so I will know that I should put you in my contact list and call you back. Email is my favorite communication where possible, be- cause I have a record on my computer and don’t have to rely on my aging memory. Snail mail works, too.
