Report on the Taylor Virtual Reunion #

Theme: Meeting Taylor Kin Through Technology #
Need: Over the past several years members have asked about having another reunion similar to those in the past. The big prob- lem was the scattered nature of the family across America plus the Pandemic.
Proposal: The proposal in the Fall of 2020 was to do a virtual reunion. The Taylor Family Association (TFA) board has been meeting regularly (virtually) on Saturday mornings, so they were comfortable with the idea.
Concept: A number of ideas were proposed. These included: Sharing the background of the family, Share in a general way TFA resources and projects to include: What we know and didn’t know about the different family lines based on Joseph Taylor Jr.’s family database; What TFA has been doing to gather families; Encourage member involvement in the reunion and finally sharing how members could be involved in the organization. We also hoped that our virtual model of the reunion could inspire its use at other levels of the family tree.
Result: A four part agenda was planned.

Historical Background: Jane Banes Smith had written a script a number of years ago based on the work of Shari Franke on the early family. This script had a brief narration of Joseph Taylor Jr. & Sarah Best and their 12 children. It was too long (Nearly 1 /1/2 hours) for the projected 1-2 hour virtual event. Gordon took on the task to rewrite the individual scripts down to 2-3 minutes per child. Content was reviewed by Ron Taylor for accuracy. We included in the scripts the number of family members documented in the master database for each line from Ron’s analysis. (We are missing large numbers in later generations, however.) Gordon approached members of each family to narrate their ancestor’s story. It was a useful exercise to make contact with over 50 family members, even though many could not help with this task. Of the 13 scripts four were given by a direct descendant. The others by family members. (See list of narrators on page 3.) The scripts were recorded on smartphones as MP3 (audio) or MP4 (video) files.
These files were compiled by David Taylor, who inserted them in the PPT agenda slides.
TFA resources and projects:
- TFA staff members David Taylor and Eileen Phelps shared the ongoing redesign of the Website www.taylorassociation.org and planned narrative story approach to research links.
- Ron Taylor and Nancy Gregory share insights in use and application of Legacy Family Tree software and DNA projects to the group.
- Allen White, Gordon Taylor and Ron shared experience in using Find-A-Grave memorials in researching and supporting basic family information.
Spotlighting member projects: We visited with many family members about their family history work and projects. In the end three were used.
- Allen White shared his work and experience with Find-A-Grave on his Charlotte Taylor line.
- We highlighted the work of Nelda and Lawrence Saunders in Stewart County TN in gathering and publishing the county histories and their work with Jim Long (a cousin) in the county history archive office. The Saunders’s daughter-in–law, Angie, provided them technical support.
- Faye Alford shared her work in cemetery preservation in Warren County KY. She has worked in over 20 family, Church and community cemeteries.
Open member forum: The open forum was popular. Many members visited with distant family and asked questions. In fact, we finally had to conclude after nearly 20 minutes of visiting and sharing.
Behind the scenes:
The agenda was managed using powerpoint slides for two purposes. 1. To manage the meeting with narrated bridges to each section and as an outline for the reunion events. The host, Roger Taylor Russell, remarks were attached to the PPT slides for easy for directing the technical requirements of the reunion. Three weeks before the event, David took control of the PPT Agenda slides and thereafter managed the event.
Virtual organization tasks were based on TFA officer and staff skills and responsibilities in the organization Gordon Taylor, Descendant Research, and Roger T. Russell, President, worked on the initial plan and Gordon took the lead to implement. This included the tasks outline below.

Virtual technology
David R Taylor, Webmaster with Mike and Ron consulting David ended up using a Zoom capability that he was familiar with from his work. He directed the dry runs with all participants and technically managed the event and agenda Mike, Ron and Nancy managed the chat sessions during the event.
Analysis and research was provided by Database Manager Ron Taylor. This information was used to enable invitations to over current and past members of TFA. Background information and development of discussion presentation.
Evaluation:
The board members did a wonderful job of working together, sharing ideas and developing discussion sessions. Since this was the first time TFA had hosted an event of this type and magnitude there were some bumps but drawing on the strengths and skills of all made for a successful event both technical and content. There were many favorable comments.
We would like to thank Clayton Brough for his help. He gave us many valuable tips the Brough Family Association learned from their own virtual family reunion.

It’s a Matter of Obituaries, Cemeteries, and More

Our Milestones column doesn’t tell the whole story. We have several volunteers watching the newspapers, especially Shari Franke and Nancy Gregory, but our Taylors who live in locations outside of Utah, or Taylor descendants we don’t have in our database are often overlooked. Ron Taylor, our database manager, has created a list of Taylor descendants who died since 2000. At the present time, this TFA Death Index has 11,518 names. In the past year he has found death dates for 32,080 people! He has 2,691 still to search for.
One of the best resources Ron has found is Find-a-Grave, https://www.findagrave.com/. He is adding the re- cord number for each person he finds to the database. If your line has someone creating memorial pages in Find-a-Grave, you have an excellent place to add details about your relative, such as a photo of the gravestone and an obituary. Ron is not creating Find-a-Grave pages for Taylor descendants and spouses who don’t have one, but when there are enough details to be sure the person matches our database, he can often find information about family members we need to add.
Not all the entries refer to places where the deceased is actually buried. Some entries are for cenotaphs (memorials), but these can be helpful sources as well. It costs nothing to create a Find-a-Grave entry. Why not spend some time on this website looking for your relatives? Send Ron an email (contact info on Page 10) and let him know what record numbers to look for.

The names in the report only include those people who have died in 2000 or later. They’re listed in descending order by death date, so you have to scroll down to get to those that Ron has identified (or you can search the spreadsheet with Control-F).
There is a Legends tab at the bottom that will explain what the color codes mean. Of special interest will be the ones in lavender, because they are deaths not reported in our newsletter’s Milestones. Studying this list takes a bit of effort, but you might find this whole thing so interesting that you’ll want to use the idea for your collateral lines and build a spreadsheet of your own. (Family history can be addictive.)

What about the Taylor Cemeteries? Someday, we hope we’ll have information on our website that will make it easy for our Taylor descendants to plan trips to visit graves of ancestors of special interest to them. In the meantime, we’ll be reporting on cemeteries in Kentucky in this issue and in our next issue.
We want to thank our Taylors who have faithfully maintained gravesites of many of our ancestors who were buried in Warren County, Kentucky. In this issue we have reproduced a section of this year’s letter from the Green River Union Cemetery Improvement Association, Inc.
This cemetery was once the churchyard of the Green River Union Chapel, an early meeting house in Richardsville, erected and supported by our Taylors and their relatives and neighbors. Taylors and relatives and neighbors are still maintaining and supporting this cemetery. Almost all of the names found in this letter segment are Taylor descendants or connections.
In our next issue we hope to report on efforts the Taylor kith and kin are making to maintain the Taylor and Hudnall cemeteries and keep down the unwanted blackberries and other plants that prevent visitors from studying the graves. We are looking at the idea of adding plaques with names of those buried in the cemeteries and some corrections to the large stone marker in the Taylor Cemetery. We hope to report on the work of Faye Alford, who has been mapping many of the cemeteries in Warren County.
Your editor must apologize for not adding to the Taylor Story on our website. Her internet hot spot refused to work for the best part of two months after the Taylor Reunion making it impossible to research and to upload text and pictures to WordPress. (I am living in a forest in California this year and we have been told that we’ll be connected to fiber optic in a month or two. It will be a treat to be back in the 21st century!) In the meantime, the Taylor Times, volume1 No 3 has pictures of the old Green River Union Chapel taken at the Taylor Reunion in 1993. We plan to upload color copies of these. They show interesting construction details. The back issues of the Taylor Times are on our website in black and white.
