This report was retrieved from our Norfolk tithables database of Taylor families. The information in the database was extracted from a three-volume transcription of the originals by Elizabeth B. Wingo. This database should cover all Taylor families in Norfolk County, Virginia during the period 1730 to 1780 with a thirteen-year blank spot between 1736 and 1750. Sons were reported out at age 16 by their father or by their widowed mother. This database will give us a trmendous amount of family information provided we analyze it very carefully and thoroughly.

A recent query of the database for William Taylor produced twenty-nine hits. The results of this computer study are grouped by primary area where these Taylors lived. Some comments and questions have been added to this report.

Southern Branch

  • The first William Taylor listed in the Norfolk tithables was living on the Southern Branch of Elizabeth River in 1730 (bk. 1, p. 10). William was listed between Thomas Taylor and Jane who was listed for her sons John Taylor and Edward Taylor.
  • This William Taylor was living on the West side of the Southern Branch in 1731 in the same household with his widowed mother, Jane, and his brothers John Taylor and Edward Taylor (bk. 1 p. 30). Was William widowed and moved back in with his mother?
  • This William Taylor was living at the Head of Deep Creek on the Southern Branch in 1732 in the same household with his mother, Jane, and his brothers, John Taylor and Edward Taylor (bk. 1, p. 64).
  • This William Taylor was living on the South side of the Southern Branch in 1733 in the same household with his mother, Jane, and his brothers, John Taylor and Edward Taylor (bk. 1, p. 98).
  • This William Taylor was living on the Southern Branch in 1734 in the same household with his mother, Jane, and his brothers, John Taylor and Edward Taylor (bk. 1, p. 133).
  • This William Taylor was living on the South side of the Southern Branch in 1735 in the same household with his mother, Jane, and his brothers, John Taylor and Edward Taylor (bk. 1, p. 163).
  • This William Taylor was living on the Western side of the Southern Branch in 1736 in the same household with his mother, Jane, and his brothers, John Taylor and Edward Taylor (bk. 1, p. 190).

It appears that this same William Taylor was living on the Southern Branch in 1751 in the same household with Edward Taylor (bk. 2, p. 18). They were living next to John Taylor.

  • There was a William Taylor listed for “Hollow Poplar to Upper Inhabitants” on 1753. This is an area near the head of the Southern Branch (bk. 2, p. 46).
  • This William Taylor was living on the West side of the Southern Branch in 1753 next to Edward Taylor (bk. 2, p. 54).
  • This William Taylor was living on the West Side of the Southern Branch in 1754 in the same houshold with Edward Taylor (bk. 2, p. 88).
  • This William Taylor was living on the West Side of the Southern Branch in 1756 in the same houshold with Edward Taylor (bk. 2, p. 100).
  • This William Taylor was living on the Southern Branch in 1757 in the same household with his mother, Jane, and his brother Edward (bk. 2, p. 115).
  • This William Taylor was living on the Southern Branch in 1759 next to John Taylor and Edward Taylor (bk. 2, p. 138).
  • This William Taylor was living on the Southern Branch in 1761 (bk. 2, p. 162).
  • There was not a William Taylor living on the Southern Branch in 1765.

Western Branch

  • There was a William Taylor living on the Western Branch in 1732 in the same household as his father, Thomas Taylor, and his brother Andrew Taylor (bk. 1, p.75).
  • This William Taylor was living on the Western Branch in 1733 in the same houshold as his father, Thomas Taylor, and his brother Andrew Taylor (bk. 1, p. 95).
  • This William Taylor was living on the Western Branch in 1734 in the same household as his father, Thomas Taylor, and his brother Andrew Taylor (bk. 1, p. 141).
  • This William Taylor was not living on the Western Branch in 1736 in the same household as his father, Thomas Taylor (bk. 1, p. 183).
  • There was a William Taylor living on the Western Branch in 1771 in the same household with John and Isaac Talbot (bk. 3, p. 150).
  • There were three (3) William Taylor listed on the North side of the Western Branch in 1773 (bk. 3, p. 198). One was with mother, Dorcas Taylor, one was with James Taylor, and the third was living in his own household.
  • There were two (2) William Taylor listed on the North side of the Western Branch in 1778 (bk. 3, p. 264, 265). There was also a William Taylor located from Portsmouth to New Mill Creek in 1778 with John Taylor and Edward Taylor (bk. 3, p. 267).
  • There was a William Taylor living on the South side of the Western Branch in 1780 (bk. 3, p. 288).

Borough of Norfolk

  • There was a William Taylor living in the Borough of Norfolk in 1771 in the same houshold as Richard Taylor, John Taylor, Thomas Hoffler, and Stephen Deans (bk. 3, p. 164).
  • There was a William Taylor living in the Borough of Norfolk in 1772 in the same houshold as Richard Taylor, John Taylor, Thomas Hoffler, Stephen Deans, and Cornelius Edwards (bk. 3, p. 169).
  • There was a William Taylor living in the Borough of Norfolk in 1773 in the same houshold as Richard Taylor, John Taylor, Stephen Deans, and Cornelius Edwards (bk. 3, p. 206).
  • There was a William Taylor living in the Borough of Norfolk in 1774 in the same houshold as Richard Taylor, Stephen Deans, Cornelius Edwards, and John Bailey (bk. 3, p. 243).

Notes

  • William Taylor of the Western Branch was in Edgecombe County, North Carolina in 1735 with his brother Andrew Taylor. William died in 1744 in Edgecombe County, and Andrew Taylor died in Northampton County, North Carolina in 1759 (bk. 1, p. 63).
  • William Taylor of the Southern Branch was clearly the son of Richard Taylor II and his wife, Jane.
