Andrew Taylor 101

1 min read

Introduction

The information that follows was retrieved from our Norfolk tithables database of Taylor families. The information in the database was extracted from a three-volume transcription of the originals by Elizabeth B. Wingo. This database should cover all Taylor families in Norfolk County, Virginia during the period 1730 to 1780 with a thirteen-year blank spot between 1736 and 1750. Sons were reported out at age sixteen by their father or by their widowed mother. This database will give us a tremendous amount of family information provided we analyze it very carefully and thoroughly.

A recent query of the database for Andrew Taylor produced only five hits. The results of this computer study are grouped by primary area where these Taylor families lived. Some comments and questions have been added to this report.

There was an Andrew Taylor living on the Western Branch in 1730 in the same household with Thomas Taylor and Robert Read (bk. 1, p. 17).

Notes

The will of Andrew Taylor I was proved 16 May 1718 in Norfolk County, Virginia, so he was not in the Norfolk tithables in 1730.

The only Andrew Taylor in the Norfolk tithables was Andrew Taylor II. Andrew Taylor II was the son of Thomas Taylor and his wife Mary of the Western Branch, and grandson of Andrew Taylor I and his wife Ann. Andrew Taylor is listed in the 1730 tithables, but he drops out of the tithables in 1735.

Andrew Taylor II, grandson of Andrew Taylor I, was in the land records of Northampton County, North Carolina starting in 1735. Andrew was in the Norfolk land records in 1749 as being of Northampton County, North Carolina. The will of Andrew Taylor II was proved in the April 1759 court of Northampton County, North Carolina. He named wife, Ann; sons Caleb and Dempsey; and daughters Grace and Judith.

(The 101 in the title indicates this was a summary of research intended to be part of a group of summaries of Gayle’s findings. The group was never completed.)
