Baby Pioneer: William Herbert Goddard was the son of William Pace Goddard and Anna Krillia Taylor. He, and his younger sister Maud, were tiny babies when the Goddards set out from New Harmony, on the San Juan Mission. He was born 9/12/1877 New Harmony, Washington, UT, and died 11/18/1922 Globe, Arizona. He married Sarah Louise Trousdale 10/31/1897 Sonora, New Mexico. She was born 11/25/1877 Cedar Hill, Dallas, Texas and died 1/14/1961 El Paso, El Paso, Texas. She was the daughter of Christopher Columbus Trousdale born 1847-48 Wayne County, Illinois, died 1935 El Paso, El Paso, Texas; he married Mary Jane Patton in 1874, Ellis County, Texas. She was born December 1854, Ellis County, Texas and died November 1883, Ellis County Texas.
William Herbert and Sarah Louise had six children, Velma Edith, William C., Sidney L., Herbert H., Hazel K, and Robert A. Sidney L. and Robert A., died before age two and are not listed in the 1910 United States Census, Magdalena, Socorro, New Mexico; Velma age 11, William C. age 10, Herbert H. age 8, and Hazel K. age 4. William H. listed age 32, born Utah; Sarah Louise listed age 31, born Texas.
He spent most of his adult life in the Forest Service. Having been the Superintendent of National Forests both in New Mexico and Arizona. He also spent time in Washington D.C. with the National Forest Service. He was said to have been an amazingly strong man, who could grab the spoke of a fully loaded wagon and spin the wheel. It is also said, that as a young ranger, on his long horseback surveys, that several times he had to kill his pack horse to save himself from wild animals.
On one occasion, while he was gone, Sarah Louise had to kill a mountain lion that had gotten into their chicken coop, and on another fired her gun in the air to scare off a bear that was trying to steal a side of beef hanging on their porch.
